Libraries and Open Educational Resources: The Present and the Future CONUL Training & Development Online workshop, January 21st 2021

Catherine Cronin is Strategic Education Developer at the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education where her work focuses on critical approaches to digital and open education, spanning practice and policy. Her 2018 PhD explored the use of open educational practices (OEP) in higher education. Catherine is a member of several advisory and editorial boards as well as the GO-GN and FemEdTech networks, and a co-developer of Equity Unbound. Why OER and Why Now?

In this presentation Catherine provides an introduction to Open Educational Resources and Open Educational Practices, exploring their relevance and how they address issues of Access, Equity and Pedagogy in the current educational and societal landscape.

Stacy Katz is Assistant Professor and Open Resources Librarian-STEM Liaison at Lehman College, City University of New York (CUNY). She initiated, developed, and oversees the Open Educational Resources (OER) initiative for the college. Stacy’s research to date has focused on OER, particularly how librarians develop and support OER initiatives, faculty professional development in OER, and student views on OER. Her research has appeared in peer-reviewed journals such as Open Praxis, Journal for Multicultural Education, and the New Review of Academic Librarianship.  

Librarian’s Roles in Open Educational Resources

In this presentation Stacy discusses how librarians are involved broadly in OER in the United States, as well as particularly at the City University of New York. Librarians play a leading role in OER advocacy which is both consistent with the library’s role in providing access to educational resources and an innovative practice that is shifting and expanding the librarian’s role in the curriculum.

Lorna Campbell works as a Service Manager – Learning Technology within Education Design and Engagement at the University of Edinburgh, where she supports the OER Service and Academic Blogging Service. Lorna is a Trustee of both Wikipedia UK and the Association for Learning Technology, and a Certified Member of ALT (CMALT). She is also an active member of the #femedtech network, and was instrumental in creating femedtech.net.

Open to All: OER as Infrastructure at the University of Edinburgh

In this presentation Lorna introduces the OER Service at the University of Edinburgh, exploring its role in supporting the University’s Open Educational Resources Policy and the creation of open content on a variety of digital platforms.

David Hughes works for Education and Training Boards Ireland as Digital Systems Librarian. David has worked in the Library and Information Science sector for nearly 30 years in a variety of roles in both the public and private sector. Before his current role David worked as systems librarian at Dublin Business School. David is currently chair of the Academic and Special Libraries section of the Library Association of Ireland.

One Bite at a Time: Starting OERs in the FET Sector

In this presentation David explores the relevance of Open Educational Resources for the Further Education sector in Ireland and introduces a recently published set of OERs, Maths for Trades, created as a collaboration between Adult Literacy Organisers, the Active Inclusion Co-Ordinator, the Apprenticeship Manager and the

Librarian at Education and Training Boards Ireland.

Yvonne Desmond is sub librarian with responsibility for Digital Services & Research at Technological University Dublin. Yvonne joined DIT as manager of the Library Central Services Unit in 1999. Her current concern involves implementing the digital library and working at a senior level within the institution to develop research strategy and services.

 

Dr. Barry Ryan is a biochemistry lecturer and programme director in Technological University Dublin. Barry is passionate about the practical implementation of research informed teaching and in supporting others in their personal development in this area. Barry leads the National Forum-funded IMPACT project which is creating a sustainable student focused approach to Teaching and Learning enhancement in TU Dublin.

OERS: Dissemination and Preservation

This presentation, jointly-created by Yvonne and Barry, introduces the IMPACT Project at TU Dublin and its establishment of TOTAL, TU Dublin’s Open Teaching and Learning Repository and Archive, which hosts per-reviewed OERs.
